Call of Duty: From OG FPS to Massive Franchise :
If you’ve ever played a first-person shooter (FPS) game in the last twenty years, chances are you’ve heard of Call of Duty. It’s one of those juggernauts in gaming — big budgets, big hype, and a ton of people playing. I want to walk you through how it all started, who makes it, how it’s grown, where it is now, and what’s coming next.
The Beginning :
Call of Duty debuted on October 29, 2003, by developer Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Back then it was more grounded: World War II settings, realistic infantry combat, focus on single player campaign + multiplayer was simpler. It stood out because of how cinematic and immersive it tried to be, even in the early 2000s.
The Producer / Developer Side :
Over time, Call of Duty became more than just Infinity Ward. There are several studios that work on games in this franchise now:
- Infinity Ward (the original, still active)
- Treyarch (lots of Black Ops titles)
- Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software, and others also contribute depending on the game.
Activision is/was the publisher for all mainline titles.
Growth and Evolution :
The game hasn’t stayed static. A few of the ways it evolved:
- Shift from WWII to modern and even future settings in many games (e.g. Modern Warfare series, Black Ops, etc.)
- Bigger multiplayer, better graphics, more modes (Zombies, co-op, etc.), more post-launch content.
- More platforms: consoles of each generation, PC, etc. Some also include mobile or cross-platform in certain ways.
Latest Version & Upcoming :
As of now, the most recent release is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which came out on October 25, 2024. It’s the 21st main installment of the series and the seventh Black Ops game.
The upcoming version is Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, scheduled for release on November 14, 2025. Black Ops 7 will be developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, published by Activision. It will have campaign (single player / co-op), multiplayer, Zombies mode, etc.
Big Stats and Achievements :
Here are some cool numbers / facts that show how big Call of Duty has become:
- The franchise has sold over 500 million copies globally.
- It has around 100 million monthly active players across all platforms.
- Revenue is huge: by 2022, Call of Duty generated something like US$30 billion in lifetime revenue.
- It’s officially one of the best-selling FPS franchises, verified by Guinness World Records.
From Then to Now: What Changed Big Time :
Putting it all together, here’s how Call of Duty has shifted over time:
- Story & Settings: From WWII → modern wars → near-future / sci-fi / speculative settings.
- Gameplay Mechanics: More mobility, more gadgets, more variety in modes. Things like sliding, diving, faster movement, more vertical maps, more customization etc.
- Scale: Bigger launch days, more players online, more content after release (DLC, updates, seasons).
- Cross-platform and accessibility: More platforms, more parity among them, multiplayer modes inviting co-op and competitive players alike.
What to Look Forward To with Black Ops 7 :
Since BO7 is coming up, here are things people are watching for:
- How the campaign / story will build from past Black Ops lore (fans care a lot about the timeline & characters). Black Ops 7 is set in year 2035, and returns David Mason (from Black Ops II) as a lead.
- Co-op campaign: this has been teased. That means you can play through some story missions with friends.
- Zombies mode is returning as well, continuing the “Dark Aether” storyline.
- Multiplayer innovations: new maps, possibly new modes, maybe improved movement or mechanics. Also, an open beta is planned ahead of release.
Some Weaknesses & Criticisms (so you see the full picture) :
No game is perfect, especially big franchises releasing annually or close to it. Some of the criticisms people often raise:
- Fatigue: Because Call of Duty usually releases yearly (or very frequent), some players feel the games get too similar, or that there’s not enough innovation each time.
- Balancing issues: Multiplayer balancing (weapons, maps, modes) is always controversial. What’s OP (overpowered) in one version tends to stir up complaints.
- Bugs / launch problems: With big titles there’s often glitches or bugs at launch, sometimes server issues, sometimes performance issues, especially across many platforms.
- Narrative confusion: Because there are many subseries (Modern Warfare, Black Ops, etc.), reboots, alternate timelines, etc., some players find the story continuity confusing.
Conclusion :
All in all, Call of Duty is one of those game universes that has grown far beyond its humble beginnings. From a WWII shooter in 2003, it has expanded into modern, near-future, and speculative warfare; from just single-player + simple multiplayer to a huge ecosystem of multiplayer, zombie modes, co-op, constant updates. It’s made by several big studios under Activision, sells in the hundreds of millions, has tens of millions active players, and keeps pushing forward.
Black Ops 7 looks like it’ll continue that trend — building off what works, adding some new stuff, and trying to keep longtime fans happy while pulling in new players.
